Getting a United States driver's license in Texas as an immigrant

Getting a driver's license in Texas as an immigrant can seem daunting, but with the right information and preparation it is a relatively straight forward process. Step 1: gather the required documents

Note: some of the documents may need to be translated to English or notarized before they can be accepted by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

Step 2: Complete Driver Education Course 

If you are under 18, you will need to complete a driver education course before you can apply for the drivers license. This course will cover the basics of driving, safety tips, and traffic laws. Step 3: Schedule and pass written exam

With the necessary documentation and when you have completed the driver education course, if applicable. You can schedule a written exam at your local DPS office. This exam will test your knowledge of Texas traffic laws and road signs. At least a 70% score is needed to pass.

Step 4: Schedule and pass driving skills test

During this test a DPS examiner will evaluate your driving skills, ability to obey laws, control the vehicle, and react to driving situations. You will need to bring a vehicle that meets certain safety standards to the test.
