To be honest it’s very difficult to think about an accident. It's not like you wake up one day and say “hmm… I'm prepared for an accident”. Accidents occur and sometimes the nerves and uncertainty take hold of us and for a few moments, it might seem that we have no idea where to start or how to solve the problem.
If you ever find yourself in an accident, here are some steps you can follow to solve the problem.
- If it’s possible, move to a safe location. You’ll be able to avoid traffic and be in a calmer place where you can wait to resolve the situation. This site can be on the side of the road or a platform / sidewalk. Once you're in a safe place, turn off your car and turn on your emergency lights.
- Take a deep breath and check if you are hurt. Do the same with those who accompany you, if someone is injured, call 911, if you feel that you are severely injured, do not move and wait for first aid to help you.
- If you are okay and there are other cars and people involved, get out of your car and ask if you can be of assistance. Remember that everyone is nervous and this is not the time to see whose fault it was. (By the way, never argue with other drivers about the accident, the insurance companies are the ones in charge of deciding who is at fault in the accident.)
- Call the Authorities. No matter how big or small the accident is, it is important to have law enforcement document the accident. They will send an officer if needed. Don’t let the other party make that decision for you! The officers will guide you in creating an accident report.
- Take lots of pictures and video of the accident, your damage, and the surrounding areas.
- Write down exactly what you remember immediately. Take VERY detailed notes while the incident is still fresh in your mind. What happened, When did it happen, Who was involved, How many passengers in the other car, Did anyone have injuries, Etc.. this step will be important if you need to provide a statement to an insurance company.
- Get a copy of the police report, and the officers contact information (Phone, Email, Badge Number). If the officer can’t provide a copy of the report, at a minimum you should get the report number and the police officers main headquarters.
- If your vehicle is not drivable, ask the police officers to help you get a tow truck and transportation for you.
- Collect the other drivers insurance information and contact information (Phone, Address, Email). If necessary, share your information.
- If the police report deems the other party to be at fault, immediately contact the other party's insurance company directly. Do not wait for the other vehicle to make the report or claim.
- Call or Message your Insurance Agent or Insurance Company to report the accident or damage to your vehicle.
- Notify your loved ones that you have been in an accident. Perhaps you have already done it by now, but if you haven't yet, remember that there are those who are waiting for your return, your message or your call.
